How to Plan a Sabbatical Abroad

Now that I have a plan for what I’m going to do during my sabbatical, I’ve really started getting into the weeds with more planning.

Of course, taking at least part of my sabbatical abroad means a very different set-up than if I was taking it at home. But that’s part of the fun of it all.

Over the course of the next few weeks, I’m going to take you down my rabbit hole of planning a sabbatical abroad.

How to Plan a Sabbatical Abroad

Here are the four main steps to planning an international sabbatical and what you have to look forward to over the next few weeks.

1. Decide Where to Go

As I previously announced, we are going to take our sabbatical in Europe. But, we have to narrow down exactly where in Europe we are going to go. We have a list of six to seven countries but plan to narrow it to between two and four.

2. Start Shopping for International Flights

Besides the accommodations, one of the most expensive parts of a trip abroad will be the flights. I’ll share my secrets with you about how I shop for cheap international flights.

3. Begin Browsing Where to Stay

I’m not going to cover details on finding places to stay. We have already determined that an Airbnb is right for us given the size of our family and extended trip.

4. Find the Best Resources for More Specific Plans for Your Trip

Once you know where and when you’re going someplace, it’s time to get into the real details of trip planning. It’s too challenging to do this solely online, so I’ll tell you a bit more about how I find the best itineraries and plans for the specifics of our trip.

The Bottom Line

Over the course of the next few weeks, I’ll share with you the specific details of how to plan a sabbatical abroad. Stay tuned!
